Meet the Band

Inspired by bands such as N.E.R.D, The Roots, and Bob Marley & the Wailers, The NLR Experience uses music as a tool to inspire people, address social issues, and keep bodies rocking. Founded in 2013 after meeting at various Detroit open mics, Nique Love Rhodes (emcee), Carlton White (drums), Sheridan McCarver (drums), Rod Gaston (bass), Trey Priest (guitar), and Barry Chambliss (piano/keyboard) created The NLR Experience - the sonic fusion of hip-hop music with jazz and rock to provide social commentary, spread Detroit love to all, and stir up the revolutionary within the soul of everyone who listens. The band has performed at many major festivals and headlined venues including the North by Northeast Music Festival (Toronto), African World Fest (Detroit), the Nuyorican Poets Café (New York City), and the South by Southwest Music Festival (Texas), and most recently released their debut album The NLR Experience.

Carlton White - Drums

A Detroit native, Carlton has 20 years of experience playing drums.  He has developed to become one of the most versitile drummers in Detroit, and is also a member in the indie rock-pop band Two Cheers.  Carlton provides the NLR Experience with the boom and the bap to keep heads and bodies rocking during live shows.

Rod Gaston - Bass

Born and raised in Detroit, Rod has been playing bass for 12+ years. Rod is known as one of the most talented and sought after bassists in Detroit. He is a member of Detroit band ONEFREQ. His talents have led him to open for artists like Erykah Badu and Wale.  Rod brings the soulful groove to the NLR Experience.

Trey Priest - Guitar

Heavily influenced by artists such as Prince and Jimi Hendrix, Trey taught himself how to play guitar several years ago.  A native Detroiter, Trey has grown to be one of the most dynamic guiarists in Detroit.  Trey’s talent has landed him gigs opening up for talents such as Hiatus Kiyote and Kamasi Washington.  Trey brings the rock and funk element to the NLR Experience.

Barry Chambliss - Keyboards

Born and raised in Atlanta, Barry fell in love with music at a young age.  When he moved to Detroit as a teen, he began developing his artistry as a musician.  Barry plays multiple instruments including piano, drums, and guitar.  Barry brings beautiful, jazzy melody as well as edgy, electronic synths to The NLR Experience.
